Kelsey McGee Scott

Kelsey McGee Scott This is really the classic “A Boy & His Dog,” or really better told, “A Dog & Her Boy.” Her name is Kelsey McGee, and I’m her boy, Shannon. Her favorite words are “cemetery” and “beach,” along with “ride,” which to her means she’s going to one or the other. People who know us know we’re rarely found anywhere else. We’ve literally explored hundreds of Southern graveyards and cemeteries, and Hunting Island, SC has been our beach for over a decade. We’ve been joined at the hip since adopting her in 2012. Kelsey’s road to a Forever Home has been a precarious one. In ways, it all began hidden inside of a dirt hole where some misguided teenager had placed her, thinking she’d make a great bait dog for dog fights. Which is why, looking at the end of Kelsey’s tongue, you can see a little torn sliver, reminding us of what she escaped. Eventually, the receiving shelter let Kelsey hang around over 3 months because they said when she sat down, she did a “gorilla sit,” and according to them, that made her special. I know that intimate detail because I volunteered there 4 days a week. With some alarm, I also learned she was on the Doggy Death Row’s short list, per such ominous signs on cages. One day, while pulling her gorilla-sit pose, Kelsey just looked up at me from behind her cell door with this unblinking, upward glance, and I recall it like yesterday. She sighed, impatiently, as if her eyes were expressing, “This place is boring – when are you doing the paperwork?” And that was it. We never looked back at that place. She was my prize for getting all of the other doggy souls out of there.

Meet the Team

Story

Shannon Scott has soaked up Savannah and The Low Country at every level for over 30 years. Arriving as a Fine Arts student of The Savannah College of Art & Design (SCAD), he became a regular at The Georgia Historical Society and, as a conversationalist, earned the graces of many locals — from the richest to the poorest — and absorbed their stories and those of their friends and family. During these nurturing hours, Shannon acquired his first tour guide license at age 19 and drove carriages, buses and trolleys, and he worked as a step-on guide for major tour bus companies. As it was somewhat impossible to live solely as a tour guide, Shannon became a cook and caterer, refining his talents in many a restaurant and private club. 1995 was a pivotal year . Shannon created all of the walking tours for a local company and became the city’s most sought after ghost tour Storyteller. It was also during this time that Shannon began to do voice-over commercial work, further honing his skill set. After leaving SCAD, he opened a publishing company, Jones Street Productions, and published refined maps for higher-end travelers, specialized map guides, devoted to antiques and art galleries, and his most popular publication: The Foodies Guide . Always looking to the future for himself and Savannah, it would be Hollywood that took a keen interest in this area expert. Shannon found himself working as a regular researcher, associate producer and location scout for films, particularly TV shows dealing with hauntings, some of which involved on-camera participation. Most notably, these included “Scariest Places On Earth” and “Ghosthunters.” In 2002, Shannon opened his own ghost tour company and self-financed, produced and starred in his own documentary film, “America’s Most Haunted City,” based on his own experiences and those of friends and neighbors in Savannah. In 2010, Shannon sold his tour company and opened Shannon Scott Tours & Events , placing major emphasis on cemeteries and unique cultural events related to them. Future plans include tours and events in other Southern cities with cemeteries that need a greater spotlight.

Why Tour Bonaventure

Why Tour Bonaventure One of Savannah’s oldest sayings and always hovering in the Top 5: “You haven’t been to Savannah until you’ve been to Bonaventure.” The moment you get to town, you’re going to hear people talking about Bonaventure, as if it’s their coolest cousin. You know, like that one who went to school abroad and took up modeling for awhile. This may sound peculiar or downright bizarre, but if you’re REALLY paying attention to your new cultural surroundings, you’ll start to realize that it’s not so strange and entirely normal. And that to not go, or to not rearrange your schedule for the sake of exploring The South’s most famous cemetery, is truly missing out on the chance of joining a special club. Plus, you wanna meet our coolest cousin same time right? It doesn’t matter if you don’t like cemeteries. have never toured in one, or history isn’t “your thing.” Trust us. Forget what you think you know or don’t know, open your mind and just let the Bonaventure Cemetery magic happen to you. It defies, then treats. Once you make the 10-minute trek from Downtown Savannah to Bonaventure Cemetery, you won’t have any other questions about “Why Bonaventure?” Or. why almost 1,000,000, annually, make what we call “The Bonaventure Journey.” The massive, plantation era live oaks greeting you will just make one say, “Oh. Wow, now I get it.” As you start to peer through the entrance, your spirit will take over and before you know it, you’ll be floating through the gates. Then “POOF,” you disappear for what will probably be hours. You know how it goes in your favorite art museum. One marble statue leads to the next, and then security is kicking you out. Moreover, Bonaventure quickly demonstrates how the famous Savannah downtown in many ways belongs in life legacy, to those buried here. We call it putting faces to buildings. And those human stories are just as wildly colorful and delightfully decrepit as are some of the buildings they once occupied! Really Bonaventure and Savannah will start to feel like the same place. One doesn’t just read the start of a book and then stop in the middle. At least not The Savannah Story anyway. The ending tells much about all of the other parts. Bonaventure is like that. You have to read this story until the end. Then you can go home and speak of your trip with the fullness it deserves. People ask, “Well, is it free, and can we go on our own?” Positively. Bonaventure is open 365 days, 8AM to 5PM. But here’s our practical appeal, and yes, sales pitch. It’s a dizzying 200 tree covered and shrub-populated acres. Think cemetery jungle. And the freebie maps are only so useful, which is us being nice. Even for the most confident explorer, it ends up being more like wander-lost. We see many well-intentioned visitors bite off more than they can chew and throw in the towel, shrugging, “We didn’t know a tour was available” or “We’ll come back next time.” We say, “Get it right the first time!” What we provide is organized, informed and impassioned storytelling wanderlust. Shannon Scott’s Bonaventure Cemetery Journeys has been doing it longer than anyone, more often, and offers more on-site experiences than any other company in Savannah. Click our HERE to learn more!

The Buzzard Mobile

The Buzzard Mobile Defining himself, not as resident of Savannah but “A citizen of The Low Country,” Shannon has spent 32 years traveling and scouring the coastal areas of Georgia, South Carolina, North Carolina and Florida for stories that have become the joy of others. Stories are his mysticism, and conjuring them has made him a shaman of a kind. Hence his respectful borrowing of the moniker, Dr. Buzzard, The Lowcountry’s most legendary and controversial root man. Thus, every story ronin has his steed and that be The Buzzard Mobile, which carries him and his passengers on all of his Private Tour excursions.

Juliette Gordon Low – Founder of the Girl Scouts of the U.S.A.

Perhaps one of Savannah’s most famous daughters, Juliette Gordon Low devoted her life to the empowerment of young women. Born in 1860, she overcame personal hardships, including partial hearing loss, to create a movement that would inspire generations of girls worldwide. The Girl Scouts, founded in 1912, emphasized leadership, self-reliance, and community service—values that continue to shape young women today. Her final resting place at Laurel Grove is a site of homage for scouts and leaders from all over the country.

Florence Martus – “The Waving Girl”

A figure of Savannah folklore, Florence Martus became a beloved local legend. For over 40 years, she stood along the Savannah River, waving a handkerchief by day and a lantern by night to every passing ship. Her devotion to this mysterious yet endearing tradition has puzzled and charmed visitors and residents alike. Many believe she was waiting for a lost love to return, while others see her as a symbol of Savannah’s welcoming spirit. Her story endures as one of the city’s most heartwarming tales.

Nina Anderson Pape – Educator & Founder of The Pape School

A champion for women’s education, Nina Anderson Pape was ahead of her time in advocating for the academic and professional advancement of women. She founded the Pape School, which later became part of Savannah Country Day School, and was instrumental in improving education standards for girls in the South. Her progressive vision helped shape modern education in Georgia and beyond.

Eugenia Phillips – The Banished Civil War Spy

A daring and politically savvy woman, Eugenia Phillips played a covert role in the Civil War. As a staunch supporter of the Confederacy, she engaged in espionage against the Union, which ultimately led to her arrest and exile. Her fearless actions and unwavering beliefs made her a controversial but undeniably influential figure in Southern history.

Mary Marshall – Philanthropist & Builder

Mary Marshall was a woman of great generosity and vision. She used her wealth and influence to fund charitable projects, including hospitals and educational institutions. As a builder and benefactor, she left an indelible mark on Savannah’s landscape, ensuring that future generations would benefit from her philanthropy. Her legacy is a testament to the power of giving and civic responsibility.

Phoebe Pember – Famed Civil War Nurse

As one of the earliest female hospital administrators in the Civil War, Phoebe Pember served at Chimborazo Hospital in Richmond, Virginia, where she oversaw the care of thousands of wounded soldiers. Her memoirs provide one of the most detailed and personal accounts of wartime medical conditions. Her unwavering dedication to nursing and humanitarian efforts cemented her place in history as a pioneer in wartime medicine.

Mary Haskell – Benefactress & Muse to Poet-Painter Kahlil Gibran

A patron of the arts and education, Mary Haskell’s contributions went beyond financial support—she played an integral role in the life and work of the famed poet and artist Kahlil Gibran. Their deep intellectual and emotional bond influenced some of his most famous works, including The Prophet. Her support of education and literature helped bring artistic and cultural richness to Savannah. The story of their love is best revealed through a compilation of their letters and diaries, Beloved Prophet: The Love Letters of Khalil Gibran and Mary Haskell, and Her Private Journal.

Step into the Shadows of History with the Colonial Park Cemetery Tour

Explore Savannah’s rich and haunting past with the Colonial Park Cemetery tour, where expert guides unveil the fascinating history, legends, and mysteries hidden within this iconic burial ground. As one of the city's oldest cemeteries, Colonial Park serves as the final resting place for Revolutionary War soldiers, influential citizens, and victims of Savannah’s most notorious tragedies. Through captivating storytelling, you’ll uncover tales of duels, epidemics, and forgotten secrets that have shaped the city’s history. This tour offers a unique blend of history, mystery, and intrigue, making it a must-do for history buffs and ghost story enthusiasts alike.

A Cemetery Steeped in History and Legend

Established in 1750, Colonial Park Cemetery is more than just a graveyard; it is a historic landmark that holds the stories of Savannah’s trials, triumphs, and tragedies. The cemetery is the final resting place of many who played pivotal roles in shaping the city and the nation, from war heroes and political figures to the everyday citizens whose lives were marked by Savannah’s ever-changing landscape.

You’ll hear the fascinating tale of Button Gwinnett, one of Georgia’s three signers of the Declaration of Independence, whose life was tragically cut short in a fatal duel. Colonial Park also holds the grave of Archibald Bulloch, Georgia’s first governor, whose mysterious death still sparks speculation. You’ll walk the very ground where Savannah’s most infamous duels were fought, learning about the honor-bound codes that led men to face death at sunrise over matters of pride and vengeance.

Savannah’s Eerie Past Comes to Life

Beyond the stories of war and politics, Colonial Park is also a place of mystery and the supernatural. Savannah’s infamous yellow fever epidemics left thousands dead, many of whom were buried in mass graves within the cemetery. Their untimely deaths and the sheer volume of lives lost have led to countless ghostly sightings and eerie tales. Some visitors have even reported strange sensations while walking through certain areas of the cemetery.

Adding to the intrigue, the cemetery was desecrated by Union troops during the Civil War, with gravestones being altered, defaced, or even used for target practice. As you explore, you’ll notice some of these altered headstones—bizarrely listing lifespans of over 400 years or impossible dates—all remnants of the war’s impact on Savannah’s history.

A Walk Among Savannah’s Most Notable Figures

This immersive tour also takes you through the lives and legacies of other notable figures buried in Colonial Park. You’ll hear about Nathanael Greene, the Revolutionary War hero personally commended by George Washington, and James Habersham, an influential colonial leader whose contributions helped shape Georgia’s early government.

The cemetery also holds a deep connection to Theodore Roosevelt, whose great-great-grandfather, Daniel Stewart, is buried here. A celebrated military figure in his own right, Stewart’s legacy continues through Savannah’s historical narratives.

Beyond the well-known figures, the tour delves into the stories of the Gullah Geechee people, whose unique culture and traditions remain an integral part of Savannah’s identity. The cemetery holds ritual burial grounds that whisper of ancestral customs, spiritual beliefs, and a deeply rooted history that transcends generations.

From movie locations to fascinating anecdotes, this tour takes film enthusiasts and history buffs alike on a journey through the Southern city that has played host to some of Hollywood’s most memorable productions.

Savannah's cinematic legacy is often overshadowed by its historical significance, but in recent years, this beautiful city has earned its place as a key player in the film industry. With its scenic squares, cobblestone streets, and iconic riverfront views, Savannah has provided the perfect backdrop for a variety of films, from historical dramas to romantic comedies. As you embark on the Savannah Hollywood Confidential tour, you’ll be guided through some of the most iconic film spots in the city. You’ll stand in the very places where movie stars have walked, and learn the lesser-known secrets behind the scenes that make these locations so unforgettable.

One of the first stops on this tour is the ever-popular Forrest Gump bench at Chippewa Square. The bench, made famous by Tom Hanks’ heartfelt monologue, was a key part of one of the film's most iconic scenes. But did you know the bench wasn’t actually located in the square during filming? In fact, the bench was brought in for the scene, and while it remained in the square for several years, it was eventually moved to the Savannah History Museum for safekeeping. You’ll get to hear firsthand how this moment in film history came to life, and discover other fun facts about the movie’s filming process in Savannah.

As you continue your Savannah exploration, you'll hear stories of how author John Berendt, writer of Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil, lived and socialized with all of the novel's beloved characters. The movie’s adaptation, directed by Clint Eastwood, brought Savannah even more fame, with scenes filmed throughout the historic city. You’ll hear fascinating behind-the-scenes stories of the cast and crew, and how they came to capture the magic of Savannah in the film.

Another must-see stop is the Mercer-Williams House, famously featured in both the book and the movie Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil. It’s also the site of a real-life murder mystery that captivated the nation. As you stand before this grand house, you’ll hear about the intriguing events that transpired within its walls and how they were immortalized on the big screen. But more than just a filming location, the house holds deep historical significance, and Shannon Scott will explain its place in the city's past.

For those who are fans of historical dramas, the River Street location from the movie Glory will be another highlight of the tour. River Street, which served as a stand-in for Boston in the film, is a prime example of Savannah's ability to transform into different places throughout history. As you walk along this picturesque waterfront, Shannon will guide you through the filming process and share how the city’s stunning streets became part of the Civil War epic that went on to become a classic. You'll gain insight into how filmmakers used Savannah’s atmosphere to authentically recreate the era and the events of the film.

Did you know that Rudolph Valentino’s last role as a villain was filmed in Savannah? You’ll learn about the famous actor’s final film and how the city’s charm and elegance were showcased in this 1920s silent film. As you tour Savannah’s historic district, you’ll also hear about other big names in Hollywood who have worked in the city, including Oscar-winning actor James Coburn and actor Stacy Keach, both of whom were born in Savannah. Their connections to the city are a testament to Savannah's role in the entertainment world, long before it became a go-to destination for major productions.

Beyond the famous locations, Shannon Scott brings a wealth of insider knowledge, offering anecdotes that only someone with deep ties to the city could provide. The Gullah-Geechee people, descendants of enslaved Africans who lived along the Sea Islands and coastal regions, have maintained a rich cultural identity through language, customs, and traditions that are still celebrated today. On this tour, you will uncover the layers of history that have been passed down through generations, through stories and practices that connect the past to the present.

At the heart of the tour lies the Gullah-Geechee heritage—often referred to as the “language of the soul.” You’ll learn about how Gullah, a Creole language that blends African and English roots, played an essential role in maintaining communication and preserving African traditions in a time when enslaved individuals were denied the ability to openly practice their culture. Along the way, you’ll also hear about the cultural and spiritual practices unique to the Gullah-Geechee community, including food, music, and family traditions that continue to thrive.

As you journey through several fascinating lowcountry areas, you will travel through the shadows of history, revealing the untold stories of resistance, survival, and resilience.

Exploring Hoodoo and Spiritual Resilience

One of the standout features of the Drums & Shadows Tour is its focus on hoodoo, a spiritual practice that originated in West Africa and has been passed down through generations in the African American community. Hoodoo is a blend of African traditions, Native American healing practices, and European folk magic. While it’s often mistaken for voodoo, hoodoo is distinctly rooted in the cultural and spiritual needs of African Americans during and after the era of enslavement.

During the tour, Shannon Scott will take you through the mystical aspects of hoodoo, sharing stories of its powerful connection to the land, nature, and ancestors. You’ll hear about the ways in which this spiritual practice provided strength, protection, and healing for those who were oppressed, and how it continues to resonate in the lives of people today. Through evocative storytelling, you will uncover the hidden rituals, symbols, and traditions that have shaped the South's Black community, and gain insight into how hoodoo remains a living, breathing part of the city’s cultural tapestry.

A Regional Journey Across Four Counties

The Drums & Shadows Tour doesn’t just focus on Savannah—it spans across four counties, each with its own unique ties to the history of African American culture in the Lowcountry. As part of the tour, you’ll have the chance to explore the following areas:

What do people say about Shannon Scott Tours?

Hannah Welling, our tour guide, was a walking encyclopedia of the history of Bonaventure Cemetery. We really enjoyed it!

A great tour where we got to learn so much about the history of Savannah and the site itself peppered with some dark and interesting anecdotes, in a hauntingly beautiful setting. It is a unique tour because we were the only people in the cemetary after hours. Our tour guide was very knowledgable and respectful of the historical significance but also had her pulse on what was the more popular spots were for good photo ops. All in all a very unique way to spend two hours (Add in 15 min each way for the commute if you are staying in the city).

A cemetery tour? At first I was a little skeptical when our local trip planner recommended it. Then i found that that Tauck Tours ( hgh end) includes Bonaventure in their Savannah itinerary. Very happy we decided to take this tour Our tour guides nom de plume was "Lady in Mourning" and she has a true love for the cemetery its history and its symbolism. We appreciated how she was able to convey this feeling and knowledge to us. Every city has a uniqueness and Bonaventure is that for Savannah. An excellent compliment to a history of Savannah walking tour.

I enjoyed the tour, but did not know it was a WALKING TOUR. It would be helpful to mention that in the description as we saw other tours in vehicles. It is two-hours of information, but I could only stand for a short period of time and had to return to my car after one hour.

Had a tour with Mr. Lazarus Bone today. Great stories linked to the Colonial cemetery in Savannah. A lot of which links stories I’ve heard from other tours around town. By far, Shannon’s teams have the most in-depth research of the local celebrities in the cemeteries. Highly recommend. And this is my 3rd tour with Shannon’s team.

The cemetery itself was beautiful with azaleas and wisteria in bloom, but our guide Hannah really made the experience memorable. She was enthusiastic, welcoming and gave a nicely paced tour with great stories at each stop. So glad we did the walking tour as we watched the golf cart tours breeze by without making the stops we were making.

Our tour guide was Paschal and he was amazing! He knows his stuff and he has great energy and a personality to boot. You can tell he truly loves what he does and his home city. He was EXTREMELY knowledgeable and one of those people you would love to have a drink with and just listen to him tell stories for hours. Something tells me he’s got MANY good ones to share! I’ve never called a Cemetery a magical place before, but Bonaventure is. It’s stunning. Full of history. Either get there early or plan to stay after, because it is massive and I promise you’ll want to explore more than what the tour time allows. Take the tour, you won’t regret it. We felt immersed in the storytelling and Shannon and Megan both answered every question we had about the cemetery. It was genuinely so fascinating to hear all of the stories and history of Bonaventure. Shannon himself has so many connections to the people and families in the cemetery. On Shannon Scott Tours' Bonaventure Is Forever walking tour, we had an amazing time. Hannah, our guide, was excellent. She brought Bonaventure Cemetery to life by fusing her in-depth historical knowledge with captivating storytelling. We gained a greater understanding of Savannah's history and the individuals who influenced it thanks to Hannah's insightful observations about the cemetery's most significant "residents." In order to achieve the ideal mix between mystery and history, she also incorporated some of the more vibrant tales and legends connected to Bonaventure. The two hours flew rapidly, and we came away feeling truly moved, amused, and enriched. I've taken the Angels and Symbols tour with Pascal and now the Bonaventure is Forever tour with Hannah. Both tours were extremely informative and both guides were engaging orator/lecturers. Though there was some overlap in content between the tours it was great to hear the information from slightly different perspectives. Regardless of which tour you take, Shannon Scott tours provide a great historical framework to help visitors understand Savannah and it's people, and for those unfamiliar with cemetery spaces, the visual vocabulary to interpret the symbols and art within.

Impressive tour! Shannon Scott’s knowledge and appreciation of the cemetery is apparent and he shared it through intriguing and well-articulated stories. He’s a really cool, well-rounded guide. The cemetery is beautifully eerie at night. Shannon Scott took care of us—restrooms were available and he provided umbrellas and flashlights since it looked like it would rain. (It began right after the tour ended.) Not sure if every tour is as lucky, but we received cool posters. Well worth the money. Would definitely go on another tour with him.

Whoa!! Do the after hours Bonaventure tour (6-8 pm). Shannon was fantastic and such a skilled story teller. We clearly could hear the years of research and experience that lead to the wonderful details of historical storytelling. We loved his way of combining history with personal stories told to him by generations of family members. So cool! DO IT!!!

Our guide, Hannah, was incredibly knowledgeable about the cemetery's history and was just an overall delight! She encouraged questions, shared a plethora of stories, and clearly loved what she did! I'm so glad this was a walking tour instead of a golf cart tour because we were able to get right up next to each grave. This was hands down our favorite part of our time in Savannah.
